Well we have had great luck with finding hotels etc. that take in dogs for a small fee or in the case of the
La Quinta Inn & Suites (http://www.lq.com) Pets are free! Can't beat that.
So my lovely wife found a web site that shows all the places in the US that are dog friendly.
http://dogfriendly.com/ is a great web site and has been the charm for us in finding places to sleep in a bed and not in a camp or ... in the Prius. Yeeppiiiii!
So after we left Virginia Beach and all the F18 fighter jets roaring we ended up going to Kill Devil Hills where the Wright Brothers did the first powered flight. To get there we took a free ferry ride from Knotts Island to Currituck Sound. 45 mins later we have shaved 2 hours from the trip. Not a bad deal

Loaded up and off we go. |
Then we had very nice ride to get to Kill Devil Hills, I was driving so no road pics.

Replica of the first Wright Flyer |

Monument to the Wright Brothers |
Then quick stop a Dunkin Donuts for Coffee and off to Cape Hatteras. Once again a very nice drive and getting 55 miles to the gallon mind you. Shocking just shocking.

Here it is in the new location after they moved it from from 1999 to 2000. |

Nice lighting rod on the top. |
Due to erosion
of the shore, the Cape Hatteras lighthouse was moved from its original location at the edge of the ocean to safer ground 2,870 feet (870 m) inland. International Chimney Corp. of Buffalo, New York was awarded the contract to move the lighthouse, assisted, among other contractors, by Expert House Movers of Maryland. The move was controversial at the time with speculation that the structure would not survive the move, resulting in lawsuits that were later dismissed. Despite some opposition, work progressed and the move was completed between 1999 and 2000 in a massive operation. Rededicated in 2000, the lighthouse is fully open to the public at its new location further inland.
Hey Buffalo!!! Nice job.
We were going to stay at the KOA campgrounds on the cape but they were still rebuilding from the damage done by Hurricane Irene. So long drive back to a Travel Lodge that had good rates and would allow Boo the dog.
More tomorrow.
Great keeping up with your adventures! Just like being there ... well maybe not, but sure enjoy your road trip from the comfort of my own laptop.
